At Amma Illam, education goes beyond classrooms. The curriculum is carefully designed to meet the unique needs of children and young adults with intellectual disabilities. It focuses on a balanced combination of academic learning, vocational training and practical life skills to make every student more independent and confident.

Academic Skills

Students are trained in basic educational and daily life concepts through simple, structured lessons and interactive methods.

  • Reading and writing practice.
  • Number recognition and counting.
  • Understanding time and money concepts.
  • Self-help and cleanliness training.
  • Shopping, housekeeping and painting activities
  • Group singing, dancing and peer play for social development

Vocational Skills

To promote self-reliance and employability, vocational training is given in a variety of trades:

  • Manufacturing phenyl and soap oil.
  • Tailoring and simple stitching works.
  • Nursery gardening and plant care.
  • Basket weaving and handicrafts.
  • Small-scale product making for income generation.

Practical & Therapeutic Training

Special emphasis is placed on practical skills and therapies that enhance mobility, communication and overall personality development:

  • Typing practice for fine motor skills.
  • Sewing and basket folding exercises.
  • Wheelchair-based walking and sitting training.
  • Woollen dress making and craft activities.
  • Physiotherapy to strengthen muscles (especially for children with cerebral palsy).
  • Speech therapy with specialized tools (bubble straws, balloons, mirrors).
  • Daily exercises for fitness and coordination.
